How To Practise Singing At Home For Best Results

We all know practice makes perfect. But, it is what and how we practise that makes the real difference.

When you start taking singing lessons, your tutor will likely advise you to practise at home. And whilst this is of course good advice, beginner students may feel confused by what and how to practise. It all seems relatively easy, when you are in a singing lesson and your teacher guides the session. But, when you are at home, you may feel overwhelmed by the concept of learning a new skill and knowing what and how to practise for best results.

But, before we talk about what and how to practise, let’s clarify what does NOT constitute proper practice

Many students believe that to practise singing means to sing. But, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Whilst singing songs should certainly be part of practice sessions, the actual practice involves much more than just singing along to your favourite tune.

To develop your vocal skills effectively, you need to know what areas of vocal development you should work on to improve your overall technique and singing skills. Some of the most important elements of good singing technique that you will need to incorporate into your singing workout routine are:

  • posture
  • breath control
  • resonance
  • ear training and pitch control
  • vocal flexibility
  • projection
  • overall performance skills

So, the best thing to do, is to set out clear objectives for your vocal practice plan and work on a different area each day to ensure you are developing and improving all of these aspects of vocal training, which in turn will improve your overall sound.

To help students structure their singing practice sessions at home, I have created a printable weekly singing practice plan that includes examples of vocal development objectives and exercise ideas to help you work towards achieving your singing goals. You can get yours here.
